Coventry water quality, and the first thing to settle about your address

Before anything else on this page applies to you, find out whether your Coventry house is on the Kent County main or on a private well. Two addresses a mile apart in this town can be on entirely different water.

Coventry is one of Rhode Island's largest towns by land area, and the public main doesn't reach all of it. Check your water bill. If a Kent County Water Authority charge shows up on it, you're on the town supply and the numbers below are your numbers. If no water bill arrives at all, you're drinking from a well in your own ground, and nobody tests that unless you pay for it.[1]

Is Coventry tap water safe to drink?

The Kent County supply meets every federal limit that applies to it. Here's what it carries anyway.

Testing reported to the state between 2014 and 2024 detected 39 substances in this system, and 17 came in above published health guidelines.[2] The headline figure is total trihalomethanes at 49.9 parts per billion. In January 2025, a dose-response meta-analysis in Environmental Health Perspectives pooling 29 publications found bladder cancer risk statistically significant above 41 µg/L of trihalomethanes, and concluded that current US and EU limits "fail to protect against cancer in the general population."[3] Micrograms per liter and parts per billion are the same unit.

The federal ceiling is 80 ppb. It was written in 1998.[4]

Why does distance from the plant matter in Coventry?

Because disinfection byproducts aren't finished forming when the water leaves the treatment plant. Chlorine keeps reacting with organic material all the way down the pipe, so the water at the far end of a network has had longer to make them.

EPA researchers sampled four drinking water distribution systems from the entry point out to the point of maximum residence time. Trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids increased through the system before stabilizing or falling back slightly, while the disinfectant residual declined with water age.[5] Those were chloraminated systems, so the chemistry isn't identical everywhere, but the direction is the ordinary behavior of chlorinated water sitting in pipe.

Now put Coventry on that map. Kent County buys treated surface water and distributes it across eight towns to about 94,107 people, from Coventry and West Greenwich out to North Kingstown.[6] The published 49.9 ppb is one number for that entire network. It's an average of sampling points, which means roughly half the water in the system is above it, and the addresses most likely to sit above it are the ones furthest from where the water started.

Nobody has published a Coventry-specific figure. That's the point of testing at the tap.

Which of these substances has no federal limit?

Six of the seventeen. EPA has never set a Maximum Contaminant Level for any of them.[7]

The right-hand column measures against health guidelines published by the Environmental Working Group, set around long-term cancer risk.[2:1] They carry no legal force. The legal column says none, so for these six a utility could report any figure at all and still meet every federal drinking water standard that exists.

Haloacetic acids are the half the rules handle worst. Toxicological work finds them more carcinogenic than trihalomethanes, and the National Toxicology Program's 15th Report on Carcinogens lists selected haloacetic acids found as water disinfection byproducts.[8][9] HAA9 has no ceiling. HAA5, which does, reads 17.8 ppb against a limit of 60 written in 2006.

What does this water do to a pregnancy?

The largest American study on the question is a state health department's. New York linked every singleton live birth in 62 counties from 1998 through 2003 to the public water system serving the mother's address, then adjusted for race, education, employment, smoking, age and prenatal care.

Higher trihalomethane exposure was associated with low birth weight (OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.21), preterm birth (OR 1.14, 1.08 to 1.20) and small-for-gestational-age birth (OR 1.10, 1.04 to 1.16).[10] The authors describe the exposures as chronic and low-dose, the ordinary concentrations in ordinary public water. It's a cross-sectional design, so it shows association rather than cause.

Children carry a different risk profile after birth too. A peer-reviewed analysis of US disinfection byproduct data estimated cumulative lifetime cancer risk at 7.0 × 10⁻⁵ using standard adult parameters, and 2.9 × 10⁻⁴ once age sensitivity factors for infants and children were applied, about four times higher for the same water.[8:1]

Does showering in it count?

It does. Trihalomethanes are volatile, so they leave hot water as vapor and pass through skin, and a shower is an exposure route on its own.

The Spanish case-control study that measured this scored 1,219 cases and 1,271 controls on shower and bath duration weighted by the trihalomethane level in their water. The highest quartile had an odds ratio of 1.83 for bladder cancer against the lowest (95% CI 1.17 to 2.87), and households averaging above 49 µg/L had an odds ratio of 2.10 against households at or below 8.[11] Kent County reports 49.9.

A filter pitcher on the counter does nothing about that.

Why are the limits this old?

Because most of them predate the research that now matters. The trihalomethane ceiling is from 1998 and the HAA5 ceiling from 2006.[4:1] The dose-response meta-analysis that found risk rising above 41 µg/L came out in 2025.

Nitrate is the clearest case of a rule built for something else. The 10 ppm federal standard was recommended by the US Public Health Service in 1962 and codified in 1974, and it was set to prevent methemoglobinemia, the acute infant condition known as blue baby syndrome.[12] Cancer was never the endpoint it was written for. The National Cancer Institute published work in 2026 following 40,403 men for an average of 21.9 years and found aggressive prostate cancer risk elevated where drinking water averaged above 10 mg/L of nitrate-nitrogen, which is above the legal limit itself.[13] That same study found no association with trihalomethanes or haloacetic acids, and Kent County's nitrate reads 1.29 ppm, well under 10. The point isn't the level. It's that the number in the rulebook was answering a different question.

Then there's PFAS, where the rule exists but hasn't started. EPA set limits for PFOA and PFOS at 4.0 parts per trillion in April 2024 and set its own health goal for both at zero, because it couldn't identify a level with no known risk.[14] Ten distinct PFAS compounds were detected in this system, with PFOA at 3.89 ppt. The compliance deadline is now April 2031.[15]

What about lead, on the main or on a well?

Lead doesn't come from the reservoir or the aquifer. It comes out of the service line, the solder and the brass fittings between the main and your faucet, and that stretch belongs to the homeowner on either supply.

Kent County's 90th-percentile lead result was 0.0014 mg/L in 2025 and the system has never crossed the 0.015 action level on record.[6:1] That's a good number, and it describes a small sample of houses across eight towns. A 90th percentile means one in ten of the homes sampled read higher than the published figure.

The CDC's position is that no safe blood lead level in children has been identified, and that even low levels are associated with reduced IQ, reduced ability to pay attention and lower academic achievement.[16] EPA's health goal for lead is zero.[7:1] There's no threshold below which it stops counting, and nobody has measured yours.

If your Coventry address is on a well

Private wells sit outside the Safe Drinking Water Act. No utility tests them, no annual report arrives, and the owner is responsible for knowing what's in the water.[1:1] Nothing on this page describes well water, because well water in Coventry varies from one property to the next.

How do I know whether I'm on Kent County water or a well? Check your bill. A Kent County Water Authority charge means you're on the public main and the figures on this page apply. If no water bill comes, you're on a private well, which sits outside the Safe Drinking Water Act and gets no testing unless the owner arranges it.

Does being far from the treatment plant change what's in my water? It can. Kent County distributes one treated supply across eight towns, and the published 49.9 ppb is an average across that whole network rather than a reading for any one street.

Which Coventry substances have no federal limit? Six: HAA9 at 16.4 ppb, chloroform at 38.0, dichloroacetic acid at 14.1, bromodichloromethane at 4.04, trichloroacetic acid at 1.95 and dibromochloromethane at 0.792. EPA has never written a Maximum Contaminant Level for any of them, so there's no legal threshold to measure them against. Against EWG's health guidelines, HAA9 reads 273 times its guideline.

Does Coventry water affect a pregnancy? A New York State Department of Health study covering every singleton live birth in 62 counties from 1998 to 2003 associated higher trihalomethane exposure with low birth weight, preterm birth and small-for-gestational-age birth, at odds ratios between 1.10 and 1.14 after adjustment for maternal factors. It was a cross-sectional study, so it shows association rather than cause, and the exposures involved were the ordinary low concentrations found in public water.
