East Greenwich tap water, and what twenty years in one house adds up to
East Greenwich is a town in Rhode Island where people buy a house and stay in it. The cancer research on chlorinated water is organized around exactly that variable, and it isn't concentration. It's years.
A 2025 meta-analysis in the Journal of Hazardous Materials screened 433 publications and pooled 16 of them, covering 8,126 bladder cancer cases against 13,843 controls plus three cohorts following 112,654 people. Compared with people never exposed or briefly exposed, medium-term exposure to trihalomethanes carried an odds ratio of 1.30 and long-term exposure 1.59 (95% CI 1.40 to 1.81).[1]
The authors are careful, and so are we. Their cohort data alone don't establish a causal link, and the association held in men but not in women. What the paper describes is a risk that grows with the number of years you drink and shower in the same water.
East Greenwich runs on Kent County Water Authority. Its trihalomethanes read 49.9 parts per billion.[2]
Is East Greenwich tap water safe to drink?
It meets every federal limit that applies to it. The question is what those limits cover.
A January 2025 dose-response meta-analysis in Environmental Health Perspectives pooled 29 publications and found bladder cancer risk statistically significant above 41 µg/L of trihalomethanes. Its stated conclusion is that US and EU regulatory limits "fail to protect against cancer in the general population."[3] Micrograms per liter and parts per billion are the same unit. The federal ceiling is 80 ppb and was written in 1998.[4]
Colon cancer is the newer line of evidence. A Swedish population-based cohort followed 58,672 adults for an average of 16.8 years and found that men whose water carried trihalomethanes at 15 µg/L or more had a hazard ratio of 1.26 for colorectal cancer and 1.59 for proximal colon cancer specifically.[5] No association appeared in women. East Greenwich's supply is more than three times that study's high-exposure threshold.
Testing reported to the state between 2014 and 2024 found 39 substances in this system and 17 above published health guidelines.[2:1]
Which of these has no legal limit at all?
Six of them. EPA has never set a Maximum Contaminant Level for any of these compounds, anywhere in the United States.[6]

Those multiples are against health guidelines published by the Environmental Working Group, which are set around long-term cancer risk.[2:2] They aren't legal thresholds. The legal thresholds are the middle column, and for these six there aren't any, so there's nothing to pass and nothing to fail.
Toxicological assessment finds haloacetic acids more carcinogenic than trihalomethanes, and the National Toxicology Program's 15th Report on Carcinogens lists selected haloacetic acids found as water disinfection byproducts.[7][8] HAA9, the widest gap on that table, is the one with no ceiling.
What do twenty years do to the people in the house?
Risk assessment for these compounds is cumulative by construction. The peer-reviewed analysis of US occurrence data ran its estimate twice: once with standard adult body weight and intake, and once with age sensitivity factors that account for elevated risk in infants and children. Adult parameters gave a cumulative lifetime cancer risk of 7.0 × 10⁻⁵. Child-adjusted parameters gave 2.9 × 10⁻⁴, about four times higher.[7:1]
That's the same water, scored for a body that's still building. Using human epidemiological data instead of toxicology, the same paper put lifetime cancer risk from disinfection byproducts across US community water systems at roughly three cases per thousand people.
PFAS work on a longer clock again. Ten distinct PFAS compounds were detected in this system, four above health guidelines, with PFOA at 3.89 parts per trillion against a federal limit of 4.0.[2:3] Your body clears them slowly, so a level that never moves keeps adding to what you're carrying. ATSDR links PFAS to kidney and testicular cancer, low birth weight, accelerated puberty, raised cholesterol and weaker immune response.[9]
One study makes the immune point concretely. In 516 thirteen-year-olds from a Faroese birth cohort, diphtheria antibody concentrations fell by about 25% for each doubling of PFOA in blood, and modeling of exposure at age 7 predicted antibody losses of 10% to 30% six years later.[10] That study measured PFAS in serum rather than in drinking water, and it found few associations for tetanus.
What about lead in an older East Greenwich house?
Lead is the one thing on this page the utility doesn't send you. It dissolves out of service lines, solder and brass fittings, which is why the system-wide figure can't speak for your address.
Kent County's 90th-percentile lead result was 0.0014 mg/L in 2025 and has never crossed the 0.015 action level on record.[11] A 90th percentile still means one in ten sampled homes read above the published figure, and the sample is a small set of houses standing in for eight towns.
The CDC has identified no safe blood lead level in children, and links even low levels to reduced IQ and lower academic achievement.[12] A pooled analysis of seven birth cohorts covering 1,333 children found IQ falling as blood lead rose, with the steepest losses per unit at the lowest exposures.[13] That work measured lead in blood rather than in water. EPA's health goal for lead is zero.[6:1]

There's also a date worth putting in the decision. EPA moved the PFAS compliance deadline from 2029 to April 2031, so no utility in the country has to meet the new limits for another five years.[14] EPA's own health goal for PFOA and PFOS is zero, because it could not identify a level with no known risk, and the enforceable 4.0 ppt is what it judged achievable rather than what it considers safe.[15] Waiting for the utility is a five-year decision, and in this town that's often the same house and the same family.
Why doesn't the published number describe your tap?
